She began volunteering at area animal shelters in High School and has always sought to make a positive impact in our community. Stephany is a native of Northern Virginia and she has a lifelong passion for animals. Stephany has her Bachelors of Arts in Art History & Pre-Dental Science from George Washington University and an Applied Science degree in Dental Hygiene. Prior to joining the Lucky Dog team, Stephany served as the Development Director and as the Finance Director for the Junior League of Northern Virginia. ![]() Stephany works enthusiastically with our incredible volunteers and team to share the mission of Lucky Dog. In her duties as Director of Development, Stephany is responsible for steering Lucky Dog's Special Events, Giving Campaigns, and engaging Individual and Corporate Donors to greater impact the outreach of Lucky Dog. Stephany Smith is the Director of Development at Lucky Dog Animal Rescue. In 2018, Mirah began bottle feeding a 3 week old kitten named Kona and, in the end, failed in her fostering duties by keeping him! She also has Hobo, a golden doodle, adopted in 2009. Mirah's journey into rescue began when she adopted her first dog: Sparky, a black lab, in 2005. After leaving the government, Mirah served as an Executive Search Consultant for Russell Reynolds Associates, assisting non-profits and universities to recruit senior leaders. She also served as Senior Counsel in the Office of Legal Policy in the United States Department of Justice. She served as Counsel to then-Senator John Kerry and Chief Counsel to Senator Menendez. She clerked in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals for Judge Kim Wardlaw and on the United States Supreme Court for Justice Stephen Breyer. However, the real founding of Lucky Dog was undertaken by a team of volunteers who believed that animal rescue could be done in a way that not just found homes for animals in need but also in a way that matched families with what would work best for them. As Executive Director, Mirah oversees all aspects of Lucky Dog's operations.įrom 2018-2020, while serving as Executive Director for Lucky Dog, Mirah also served as the Kauai Humane Society's Executive Director, where she brought the organization back from near bankruptcy and raised the Live Release Rate from under 50% to nearly 90%.īefore becoming involved in animal welfare, Mirah worked in all three branches of the federal government.
